The Lensman Universe

The time is past beyond comprehension. Two and only two civilizations are present in the First and Second Galaxies, which are passing through each other over many millions of years. Arisia in the First Galaxy and Eddore in the Second Galaxy evolved over countless millenia, each in complete ignorance of the others’ existence. Though both species were highly advanced, the Eddorians – beings so foul and noxious as to be incomprehensible – concentrated on never-ending conquest, always attempting to satisfy their insatiable lust for power. Arisia focused more on the development of mind, eventually becoming beings of pure mind even before the galaxies began their collision/coalescence which ultimately made it possible for life to flourish in both galaxies.

Eons before life began upon Earth, then, came a time when a Arisian mind encountered the mind of one lone Eddorian. This pivotal event sets the stage for the inevitable conflict, necessitating keeping Eddore ignorant of the existence of Arisia until such time when it’s impossible for the Eddorians to fashion a weapon of power sufficient to defeat the forces working for justice in the universe. The Arisian plan involves careful manipulation of blood lines over thousands of years of Earth’s (and other planet’s) histories. Always they must preserve the lives of, and allow the breeding of two distinct lines, known off and on as Kinnison and MacDougall.

The great civilizations of Earth are portrayed against the interplay of these two ancient races, through the energized beings of flesh which they inhabit, in the form of some of the memorable characters in the history of terrestrial civilization (though the humans involved know nothing of being “energized” by otherworldly beings). The fall of Atlantis, Rome as well as other momentous epochs and dynasties, including the great wars of the 20th century, are portrayed as backdrop to the main story line (carefully choreographed by Doc in “Triplanetary”). “First Lensman”, the second book, as far as story – chronology goes, describes the formation of the Galactic Patrol as a functioning organization, leading in to the four-volume epic which comprises the actual Lensman saga, beginning with “Galactic Patrol”. Human civilizations are allowed to rise and fall (through Eddorian manipulation) as part of the Arisian vision of the Cosmic All, but, the essential bloodlines are always preserved – whether through circumstance or direct Arisian influence. Concurrently, within the span of Earth’s various ages of habitation, a similar dynamic plays out among the various races and systems of the First Galaxy. In total there are four Arisian – selected planets to produce the initial four 2nd Stage Lensman.

The actual Lensman storyline begins – chonologically – with the third volume of the series, “Galactic Patrol”, and finishes with the cataclysmic climax “Children of the Lens”.

Kinnison and MacDougall spawn the next phase of lensman. Their children, two sets of red-headed twin girls and their elder brother Christopher (Kit) Kinnison, graced by the culmination of their ancestry, did not need lenses for their telepathic abilities, nor would they ever receive help of the kind the Galactic Patrol had so depended upon. In fact, the latent and intentional abilities of the Kinnison / MacDougall union represent the en rapport frequencies of the unalloyed Love of the Universe – ultimately to spell cataclysmic defeat for the Eddorian menace – as Doc illustrates in literary fashion that power will always defeat force.

In the end, then, the children of the Arisian Lens (the five youngsters being the only Level 3 intellects in existence) saunter off among the galaxies beginning their new roles (albeit unsure of themselves) replacing the Arisians as Guardians of Civilization.
